I agree with the system maybe not trained to distinguish a vehicle when it is turned over because all collision test I've seen are stationary prop vehicles in upright position.

Educated Guess: Much like the Tesla that drove under a semi trailer crossing a rural divided highway, it was determined that the white color of the side of the truck and the cloudy sky were very close in color. The top of this overturned truck was more than likely white and you can see how much sun is lighting the area. Bright sky (cloud or sun) and bright vehicle means the computer just could not figure out the difference at a distance. As stated in the video, Lidar would not have seen this at highway speeds soon enough to make much difference. What is not noted is that the smoke from the tires appears to be heavy braking before the crash. If the driver is to be believed that he was not paying attention, i.e. "Autopilot was driving, it's the car's fault." That means that the car decided at the last minute to apply the brakes. Which is more that what most people do on the highway in a tradition vehicle. People crash into stopped traffic ALL THE TIME. The fact that the Tesla driver is alive may be due to the computer slowing the car just before impact. Computer cars are already safer than humans, period.

Lidar disagrees with all the other sensors in the rain, smoke or fog, so when it disagrees with all the other sensors the car just assumes there must be rain or fog and ignores the Lidar. Also, the signal has to reflect back to the source, at a 45 degree angle very little of the signal would return. That is how military stealth aircraft work, they bounce the signal away at 45 degree angles. Plus, the top of the truck was probably white or gray, very likely the same color as the sky. I think that the important takeaway from this event is that when something like this happens, the company takes it seriously and puts in a lot of effort to fix the bug. The problem is that if you want to buy one of these cars, and you ask the dealer if they fixed this problem, the dealer is almost guaranteed to know nothing about the companies work on a software update to prevent this in the future, if they give you any reply at all it is probably going to be a lie. All that said, what is the accident per mile driven of self-driving cars right now? It seems a little unfair when humans are probably causing 10 times as many accidents per mile traveled than self-driving cars are. On the other hand, how many miles have you personally driven and how many accidents per mile have you done? I think we need to be given this data when we decide to drive a specific self-driving car. So, for example, say there is a Chevy self-driving car that has 1 accident in 10,000 miles driven, and a different self-driving car that Chevy makes has only 1 accident in 30,000 miles driven. We should have this information when we are picking which car to buy. Also, lets say we have driven 100,000 and had 2 accidents, so we have a driving record of 1 accident in 50,000 miles. Before self-driving cars take over the roads, this simple math must be in the public record, and I believe it should be a legal requirement for them to tell us this before we buy their car. Also, we should have a way to find out our accident to mile driving record easily too. I am of course referring to accidents that could have killed someone, not just accidents where someone dies, accidents that could easily have killed someone. For instance, a car T-boning another car at an intersection, that usually kills people, so that counts even if everyone survived that particular time. An accident where someone lands in a ditch and rolls the car, I wouldn't count that, tons of my friends have rolled in a ditch, in the middle of nowhere, and barely had a scratch on them. Disagree with me if you want, after all I am just a random person on the Internet, but at least demand that the accident data is displayed as openly and as often as the car's horsepower rating or mile-per-gallon rating. Maybe if you mention the horsepower you then have to mention its crash statistics, or if you mention the miles-per-gallon you then have to mention the average miles to crashes ratio. This is important. This is the future of road safety.

I think i have an answer.. If you see the video then you will see that there is a man walking cross the road and barely not get hit by the tesla. Also the car did break before passing the man.And it might make the tesla car think that there is no threat in front. So it again kept going. And it might thought the big truck as a road sing above the road... What you think about that..

Most likely the way it was programmed didn´t allow the car to react accordingly. Keep in mind, Autopilot at this point is just an advanced driving assist system, NOT a Level4/5 system (except for the few that have the FSD beta, but in most countries it is basically a lane keep assist and active cruise control that monitors the distance). Drivers have to take over at any point if the system should fail.

autopilot is far from finished, it has a warning everytime you start using it, and you have to keep your hands on the wheel for these types of situations. the driver should've avoided the truck manually.

Guess I just saw a possible answer: while smoking, I stared down at the trucks passing by - and one of them had a roof matching the color of the road below almost exactly! From a distance large enough it would be tough to tell where the roof was facing (as the both parallax methods mentioned degrade in accuracy with distance), so chances are a machine could just ignore it's image, relying purely on radar - up to the point when the cameras could finally resolve it (you can see the brakes engaging). That was too late of course, and triggers a greater question: why did it not try to steer away, if that is what a driver would do (avoiding the accident altogether if skilled enough).

well, might have been the fact that the truck was white and it was a bright, sunny day. probably the cameras could not detect the truck over the overexposed, white background. imo, the accident could have easily been avoided if the driver actually "drove" the vehicle instead of being their own passenger.

11:44 The answer is no. Even with LiDAR the possibility of a collision would still be pretty high. Tesla's stopping distance is ~150m @ 60mph, the average range of a vehicle mounted LiDAR sensor is 100m. There are some that go up to 200m, but they aren't that common as of yet. I really want to know what the driver was doing that made him miss someone waving their hand on the side of the road.

If you dont have an anwer, dont make a video... Its a white truck, so you do have a white surface against the bright sky. There were other crashes in similar situations before and the analysis sad "not enough contrast". The system just mistook the white roof of the truck for the sky, because it could not differenciate it against the sky. And then on the other side its also not breaking for the driver on the road in front of the truck. He had to jump out of the way.

Crashed because triangulation failed. The roof of the semi presented a relatively large featureless field to the multiple cameras, so the triangulation failed to lock on a scene feature because there was none. My guess :D

I think your description of the sensors are very limited. Having worked with a number companies and defense with these systems, the basics of what you describe are true but not how they work. For example most ultrasonics work in conjunction with other hardware elements to produce a very very accurate response (necessary for parking and near field). The radar is far more complex than described, and without going into detail - this will likely replace lidar and cameras. We already use them in many defense vehicles (even driven ones) its only a matter of commercialization and time. Solid state radar, 44M and 88M Radar (and new 105M), and others are all far more well evolved and likely to become heavily used. LiDar.. is here to stay. And its good, and there are other types of LiDaR like solid state lidar, and SPADs (these will blow your mind) are also going to be heavily the main game when it comes to safety. Video cameras are _bad_ . Trust me, they are pointless from a machine perspective, no training in the world can cater for all the visual artifacts that you need to ensure _safe_ driving. Consider your own eyes, they can be _easily_ fooled because we dont depth process or object categorize as well as people think - hence why people crash. Dont copy something you know is flawed! Vision acquisition systems have been around for 50+ years and most of the problems have been well covered - they are NOT good for a way to safely navigate a 3D space. This is why Musk is a bit of an idiot. Btw - you can detect signage (what it says) from LiDaR and even from Radar.. we already do it. Why the car crashed.. the image analysis that Teslas rely upon is greatly flawed. The main problems are _light_. You just cant train ML if the source data is dark, hidden, or hard to detect. Thats why human eyes have the same issues. Nearly every Tesla owner I know has experienced the autopilot doing "weird things" like lane drifting and not braking properly or braking in random ways - this is _known_.. so individual crashes are only the edge of the problem, there is a much bigger pool of issues out there. I hope Telsa does become more lidar oriented or at least get some decent radar (the one they have is soooo cheap). For me, even putting a car like this on the road is a bad message to send to the consumer - we are ok with unsafe solutions, we will patch it and make it better as we go... thats not engineering.. thats a dodgy company.

i always had an instinct to just turn the steering wheel in such occasions where there was something in the spot where it shouldn't be at that time. so, my conclusion is that it's always better to avoid it by steering your way around it while just lifting off the foot off of the accelerator pedal instead of slamming hard on the brakes and holding the steering straight. I don't know how to explain it but I rarely hit the brakes when something like this happens on the road. maybe because the car i drive isn't an f1 and therefore needs a lot of time to slow down to 0.... idk. P.S. and forgot to mention, also I always find time to take a glimpse of my back by looking at the rearview mirror which is even more important in some cases. not showing off but it's how it is.

FSD with web cameras is a fool's errand. Anyone who thinks there will ever be a coast to coast drive of a FSD Tesla, or that every Tesla made since 2014 has all the hardware necessary for FSD, ask yourself why in 2021, Teslas still do not come with an automatic way to clean off the cameras.

Three things! First. The truck is not a semi! Bagatelle. Second. The truck is lying with the flat roof turned in the direction of the Tesla, but in an angel reflecting the radar signals away from the Tesla! The truck is invisible for the Tesla's radar in this position! Third. And in addition too that, the vision system does not recognise the object in the street as an obstruction. It hasn't learned that this white area the radar didn't see is an obstruction. And it hadn't learned to stop for this problem setting! The Tesla tought the white area was far away, or an opening, because the radar didn't pick up something!

Radar can actually match or exceed the capabilities of Lidar with higher frequencies, faster sampling and super-resolution techniques. At this point in time, I actually agree with Elon Musk. Lidar is not yet as mature as Radar technology, so much more evidence exists for the efficacy of Radar. Sure, millimetric-wave high resolution radar systems are pretty expensive to implement, but from a technical standpoint Musk is right to prefer radar in my opinion

What I saw someone else say, and makes sense, is that the driver probably wasn’t paying enough attention, but was paying some, and felt the Tesla do something when it got near the pedestrian a little before the truck (either brake or swerve slightly) and he instinctively tapped on the breaks to take control because he wasn’t really sure what was going on, but wasn’t paying enough attention between that moment and the 1 second later when he crashed so didn’t have time to react. The support for this is the way it kicked up dust when he passed the pedestrian ad that indicates something happened, whether it be the Tesla that caused it or him, but this seems like the most likely answer to me. Could definitely not be the case, but that seems like one way he could have thought he had autopilot on when he in fact did not, and he wasn’t paying attention enough to stop it himself. Come to think of it the car could have even been stopping upon seeing the overturned truck when he took control, hard to say. It could also definitely be machine error and the Tesla is at fault, but this seems more likely from the video and the fact that I’m sure Tesla has some failsafe built in that if there is a thing in the way, you stop.

It makes me wonder if it's as simple as human oversight; like, they've probably spent countless time and money engineering these systems, but not considered very basic mechanics of the situation. If you watch the video you can see the car DID brake a ways before the truck... when you slam on the brakes, the nose of the car dives down... maybe the computer thought whatever was in front of the vehicle happened to magically float up or begin to pass overhead (just like an overpass or suspended sign), and therefore didn't consider it as much of a threat or didn't have enough time to react after the object persisted in its path after it performed what it thought would be sufficient maneuvers.
